Physical DescriptionA watercolor head and shoulders portrait of Eleanor Roosevelt. Against the background of a large clock face with Roman numerals, the painting shows Eleanor’s head turned slightly to the proper left while her shoulders are forward facing. She is wearing a black outfit and a short triple strand pearl necklace. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower left: Boris Chaliapin.
Historical NoteThis portrait of Eleanor Roosevelt was used on the cover of the April 7, 1952 edition of "Time" magazine.

Custodial History NoteListed in a 1970 auction of John A. Roosevelt belongings, the portrait was purchased by the Armand Hammer Foundation for the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum.
