Physical DescriptionAn oil painting depicting a quilting party. It shows five women seated around a table working on a quilt, while a sixth woman is seated in a rocking chair in the forefront holding a baby. In the background, a bedroom can be seen through a doorway. The artist's signature is in the lower right: Dorothea Tomlinson 1934.

The painting is framed in a 3 1/2" wood frame with red and gilt highlights. A metal plaque attached to the bottom center of the frame reads: PUBLIC WORKS OF ART PROJECT. Adhered to the lower left corner of the front of the frame is a printed sticker: 219. A pencil note on the reverse of frame reads: Dorothea Tomlinson 2708 Grand Ave., Des Moines, Iowa / Title Family Quilting / This painting is finished in La Frank Vibert Retouching (?) varnish / Treasury. On the left side of the reverse of the frame is another pencil notation: Dorothea Marques / 2315 Grand Apt. 303.
Historical NoteThis painting was created for the Treasury Department’s Public Works of Art Project (PWAP). It was displayed at a PWAP exhibit at the Corcoran Gallery from April 24-May 20, 1934.
