Physical DescriptionA miniature color portrait of Elliott, James, and Anna Roosevelt. The boys are wearing light blue and white sailor outfits and Anna is dressed in a white lace dress. The artist's signature runs vertically along the right side: C.P. Newell 1914. The painting is glazed and framed in an easel-type brass frame with a hanging loop at the top.
Historical NoteThis group portrait of Elliott, James, and Anna Roosevelt was painted from life in 1914 by Claude P. Newell. FDR’s mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, commissioned the painting (along with portraits of their parents, FDR and Eleanor Roosevelt) to mark Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt’s tenth wedding anniversary. The portrait is on display in the FAMILY LIFE exhibit in the Museum’s FOUNDATIONS OF A PUBLIC LIFE gallery.
