Physical DescriptionA handwritten copy of a poem by Edwin Markham titled: Outwitted. It is written in blue ink on yellowed paper. The first line is: He drew a circle that kept me out. On the bottom, written and signed in ink: In re your remarks about U.N. & the D.A.R. Beth Cambell Short. In the lower left, in faint pencil and seemingly in Eleanor Roosevelt's handwriting, is a written word which may be "Confucius."
Historical NoteThis poem was among the items found inside Eleanor Roosevelt’s wallet after her death. A facsimile of the poem is displayed alongside other items found in the wallet in the Museum’s FIRST LADY OF THE WORLD gallery.
