Physical DescriptionAn oil on canvas head and chest portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Against a graduated brown background is FDR with his head and body turned partially to the left. He is dressed in a dark suit jacket, a white shirt, and a dark blue necktie with white dots. The painting is signed by the artist in the lower right corner: H E HILLIS.
The portrait is framed in a 2" gilt wood frame.
Historical NoteThis portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt was presented to Eleanor Roosevelt by the artist, Harriet E. Hillis, during Mrs. Roosevelt's visit to Medford, Oregon in April 1956. The portrait was originally painted during one of FDR's earlier presidential campaigns (1932 or 1936) under the artist's maiden name, Harriet E. Larkin. Before gifting the portrait to Mrs. Roosevelt, the artist did touchups to the piece which had received some damage over the years and re-signed the portrait using her married name of Hillis.The portrait is framed in a 2" gilt wood frame.
