Physical DescriptionAn original watercolor and gouache caricature of Franklin D. Roosevelt with a patriotic theme. Done in red, white, and blue, the portrait features the head of FDR at the lower center with stars in his eyes and an exaggerated chin. Behind the head is a background of vertical red stripes. The artist's signature is in the lower left: HIRSCHFELD. Handwritten black ink text in the lower right reads: DRAWN BY AL HIRSCHFELD / FOR THE AMERICAN MERCURY, APRIL 1945. Printer's marks are visible around the edge of the artwork page.
Historical NoteThis caricature of FDR was done in 1945 for the cover of "The American Mercury" magazine and evidently appeared in print shortly before he died. It was presented to Eleanor Roosevelt by Joseph W. Ferman, the magazine’s business manager.Additional Details
