Physical DescriptionAn oil on canvas portrait of Eleanor Roosevelt. Against a background of rust-colored autumn foliage, the painting shows a 3/4 length view of her from the knees up, seated, and turned partially to the left of the painting. She is wearing a sleeveless cream-colored dress, two necklaces of varying lengths, and on her left arm and hand are a gold bracelet and a gold and diamond ring. The artist's signature is in the lower right corner: M. Weger-Kleinbardt / 1964.
The painting is framed in a 3¾” wide gold frame with molded decorative detailing, black speckling, and red undertones. Attached to the bottom of the frame is a gold-painted wood plaque with black lettering that reads: ELEANOR ROOSEVELT / by MARIE WEGER-KLEINBARDT.
Historical NoteArtist Marie Weger (Kleinbardt) painted this portrait of Eleanor Roosevelt in 1964 specifically for the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum. Done in memory of Eleanor Roosevelt, the painting was based on a ca. 1932 Underwood & Underwood photographic portrait of Mrs. Roosevelt.The painting is framed in a 3¾” wide gold frame with molded decorative detailing, black speckling, and red undertones. Attached to the bottom of the frame is a gold-painted wood plaque with black lettering that reads: ELEANOR ROOSEVELT / by MARIE WEGER-KLEINBARDT.
