Physical DescriptionA wash drawing of President Grover Cleveland reviewing the American Navy fleet in New York Harbor in April 1893. At the center foreground of the scene is a longboat, displaying the American flag and the Presidential flag, bearing President Cleveland towards the fleet. President Cleveland, seen from the back and facing the fleet, is standing and lifting his hat in acknowledgement. In the background are three combination sail and steam Navy ships, from which celebratory gunfire is seen issuing, and on which sailors are standing at attention on the decks and masts. From left to right, the ships are the dispatch boat USS DOLPHIN and the protected cruisers USS NEWARK and USS CHICAGO. Additional ships are partially seen in the background. The drawing is signed and dated by the artist in the lower left corner: R F Zogbaum / '94.
Historical NoteThis drawing was given to Franklin Roosevelt in 1939 by Kermit Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt’s son. The ship pictured on the far left of the drawing, the USS Dolphin, was used by FDR for personal transport when he was the Assistant Secretary of the Navy. While aboard, he became good friends with Richard E. Byrd and William Leahy, the captain of the Dolphin, who would later become Fleet Admiral and FDR’s Chief of Staff during World War II.
