Physical DescriptionA two-piece American Red Cross uniform consisting of single-breasted fitted jacket and straight skirt made of blue seersucker. The jacket has three plastic buttons (with crosses on them) down the front, one at each shoulder, and one at each side pocket. An American Red Cross red and white patch is on the left upper arm. The skirt has a side zipper and fastens at the top with a button. Labels from Abercrombie & Fitch Co., N.Y. are sewn inside both the jacket and skirt.
Historical NoteEleanor Roosevelt wore this summer weight uniform during her 25,000 mile tour of the South Pacific in August-September 1943 as a representative of the American Red Cross. The First Lady also brought along a second uniform made of wool to wear during her trip. This uniform is on display on a rotational schedule in the ER’S WARTIME TRAVELS exhibit in the Museum’s WORLD WAR II gallery.Additional Details
