Physical DescriptionA two-piece American Red Cross uniform of consisting of a single-breasted fitted jacket and straight skirt made of plain weave wool fabric. The jacket has three brass buttons (with crosses on them) down the front, one at each shoulder, and one at each side pocket. On each lapel of the jacket is a metal pin reading: A.R.C. An American Red Cross red and white patch is on the left upper arm. The skirt has a side zipper and fastens at the top with a button. Labels from Abercrombie & Fitch Co., N.Y. are sewn inside both the jacket and skirt.
Historical NoteEleanor Roosevelt wore this winter weight Red Cross uniform during her 25,000 mile tour of the South Pacific in August-September 1943 as a representative of the American Red Cross. The First Lady also brought along a second uniform made of seersucker fabric to wear during her trip. This uniform is on display on a rotational schedule in the ER’S WARTIME TRAVELS exhibit in the Museum’s WORLD WAR II gallery.
