Physical DescriptionA black and white photostat of a caricature of Eleanor Roosevelt. She is depicted midstride and is wearing a long coat with a large fur collar, a hat, and black high heel shoes. Her hands are hidden within a fur muff she is carrying. The caricature is unsigned by the artist.
Historical NoteThis copy of an Eleanor Roosevelt caricature by Conrado Walter Massaguer, and a similar one of FDR (MO 1971.64a), were sent from Mandel Brothers in Chicago to presidential secretary Marvin McIntyre in December 1933. The caricatures were accompanied by a request to know if it would be objectionable to the Roosevelts to use these caricatures of them - along with those of other prominent figures of 1933 - as window decorations in the Mandel Brothers department store between Christmas and New Year’s. The request was answered by White House Press Secretary Stephen Early who stated that there would be no objection if no advertising was involved with the use of the caricatures.
