Historical NoteThis portrait of Eleanor Roosevelt is one of two by artist Daniel E. Greene in the Roosevelt Library’s collection. After Mrs. Roosevelt’s death in 1962, he was commissioned by McCall’s magazine to paint her portrait. Greene first created a pastel which illustrated a posthumous article by Eleanor, titled “I Remember Hyde Park—A Final Reminiscence,” that appeared in the magazine’s February 1963 edition. But before the final choice was made Greene also created this oil portrait.

Both paintings were based on sketches and photographs Greene made during a public lecture Mrs. Roosevelt delivered at Brandeis University during the late 1950s. His painting presents ER engaging in one of her most vital public roles— speaking out and challenging the next generation of Americans.
