Physical DescriptionAn American Red Cross hat, size 22½, made of wool fabric. A metal and enamel Red Cross pin is attached to the bow on the front of the hat. A maker's tag is sewn on the interior of the crown: Abercrombie / & Fitch Co. / New York.
Historical NoteEleanor Roosevelt wore this hat with her winter weight Red Cross uniform during her 25,000 mile tour of the South Pacific in August-September 1943 as a representative of the American Red Cross. The First Lady also brought along a second uniform made of seersucker fabric to wear during her trip. This hat is on display on a rotational schedule in the ER’S WARTIME TRAVELS exhibit in the Museum’s WORLD WAR II gallery.
