Physical DescriptionA painting depicting an unidentified American Navy sloop-of war. It depicts a slightly-angled side view of a three-masted sailing ship on a choppy waters. Some of the sails are unfurled and an American flag flies at the stern. Behind the ship, on both the left and right, are a variety of other large and small sailing vessels. In the right background is what appears to be a view of Gibraltar. The painting is unsigned and undated.

The painting is framed in a 2½" gilt wood frame. A typed note on the reverse indicates that naval historian, Dudley W. Knox, thought the sloop-of-war represented might be either the USS FAIRFIELD (1828) or the USS FALMOUTH (1827). Handwritten on the note is "#21" and "Estate No. 378." Also attached to the back of the frame is a white sticker with "149" printed on it.
Historical NoteThis painting was presented to Franklin Roosevelt by Margaret Weed of Jacksonville, Florida in October 1936. FDR displayed it in his private study in the White House residence.
