Physical DescriptionA pistol permit, number C 8043, issued by the State of New York, County of Dutchess, August 5, 1957. The permit is in two separate sections (a, b)

a) The form part of the permit is made out to Eleanor Roosevelt of ValKil [sp.] Cottage, Hyde Park, and lists Mrs. Roosevelt's occupation (Writer and Lecturer), employer (Self), nationality (U.S.A.), age (72), height (5' 10"), and weight (144), The permit includes a black and white picture of Mrs. Roosevelt. On the reverse is Mrs. Roosevelt's thumb print and her signature: Eleanor Roosevelt. The permit is valid until revoked and has no expiration date.

b) The second half of the permit has the permit information, and on the reverse is a space for the weapon information (not completed).
Historical NoteThis permit was among the items found inside Eleanor Roosevelt’s wallet after her death. A facsimile of the permit is displayed alongside other items found in the wallet in the Museum’s FIRST LADY OF THE WORLD gallery.
