Physical DescriptionA solid gold No. 1 dog license tag for the years 1941-1942. A gold hook for attachment is located at the top. Engraved on one side of the tag is the image of a Scottie with text: D. C. TAX / 1941 - 1942. Engraved on the other side of the tag is: "FALLA" / THE WHITE HOUSE / WASHINGTON, D.C.
Historical NoteThis dog license tag was presented to President Roosevelt’s dog, Fala, by the Commissioners of the District of Columbia. FDR had a lifelong affection for pets. The best known was Fala, a Scottish terrier given to him by his distant cousin, Margaret “Daisy” Suckley, in 1940. During World War II, Fala became Roosevelt’s constant companion and the most famous dog in America. This dog license tag is on display in the FALA exhibit in the Museum’s WORLD WAR II gallery.

Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on December 26, 1941. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
