Physical DescriptionAn oil on canvas portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt, from the calves up, seated on a wooden chair on the deck of a battleship. FDR is casually dressed in a white shirt and dark gray trousers and is seated with his legs crossed. The painting is signed in the upper right corner [partially covered by the frame]: "Goode P. Davis - 39." The painting is also signed in the lower left corner: "Goode P. Davis / 1940."
The portrait is framed in a 2" bronze-colored wood frame with red highlights made especially for the painting by the Smithsonian Institution in 1941.
Historical NoteThis portrait painting of Franklin D. Roosevelt by Goode P. Davis was done from life and was sent to FDR by the artist in 1940. Davis, a professional artist, was the son of American diplomat Norman Davis who was appointed as Chairman of the American Red Cross by FDR in 1938.Additional DetailsThe portrait is framed in a 2" bronze-colored wood frame with red highlights made especially for the painting by the Smithsonian Institution in 1941.
