Physical DescriptionA brown canvas suitcase with rounded edges and corners, trimmed in leather. There is a zippered closing that travels over three sides of the suitcase. A small oval leather label mounted beneath the exterior handle has Eleanor Roosevelt's initials in gilt lettering: E. R. Six metal half-balls form protective feet on the exterior bottom of the suitcase. The interior of the suitcase is completely lined with pink fabric and has two straps. A series of pockets line the back interior wall. Four small metal safety pins (one pink) are attached to the interior of the lid. The manufacturer is not indicated.
Historical NoteEleanor Roosevelt took this suitcase along on many of her far-flung travels during the 1950s and 1960s. She is seen carrying it at New York’s LaGuardia Airport in a well-known 1960 photograph. It is on display in the FIRST LADY OF THE WORLD area of the Permanent Exhibit.
