Physical Descriptiona) A diamond choker with forty-four graduated diamonds, each set in a round, silver mount attached to one another with gold links. The largest stone in the necklace is about 1/2" in diameter and approximately five carats. The choker closes with a gold clasp.
b) An oblong black and gold presentation box for the necklace. Embossed in gold on the lid is the inscription: A.E.R. / from / S.L.P. / March 4, 1933.
Historical NoteThis diamond choker was given to Eleanor Roosevelt by her cousin, Susan Ludlow Parrish, on the occasion of Franklin Roosevelt's first presidential inauguration in 1933. The necklace had been in the Ludlow and Livingston family for some time, and Mrs. Parrish felt that on so great an occasion, Eleanor should receive this family treasure.b) An oblong black and gold presentation box for the necklace. Embossed in gold on the lid is the inscription: A.E.R. / from / S.L.P. / March 4, 1933.
There is no evidence that Mrs. Roosevelt actually wore the necklace for the first inauguration, but she is seen wearing it in several photographs, including a January 16, 1937 formal portrait of her in her inaugural gown for that year.Additional Details
