State of New York Bureau of Motor VehiclesAmerican, 1924 - 1960

New York's Bureau of Motor Vehicles, started in 1924, was under the State of New York Department of Taxation and Finance. To deal with the explosive growth of automobiles in the 1950s, in 1959 an amendment to the State Constitution was passed, allowing the creation of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. The first NYS DMV office opened on January 3, 1961 in Albany.
