Ardis Hughes studied art at Pratt Institute and worked for "Esquire" magazine before entering the Army during World War II. Hughes created a number of war bond posters for the Treasury Department. After the war, he worked as an illustrator for national magazines and commercial clients. He was also noted for his architectural paintings of prominent buildings in Europe and the United States.
