Washington D.C. native Lawrence Beall Smith studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Chicago and had established a national reputation as a painter, sculptor, and illustrator before World War II. During the 1940s he founded the Katonah Gallery—now the Katonah Museum of Art. During the postwar years Smith continued painting and sculpting and earned distinction as a book illustrator. His work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and other institutions.
