Lionni lived and worked in Italy before immigrating to the United States in 1939. Settling in Philadelphia, he quickly established a successful advertising design practice. After the war, he worked as art director for "Fortune" magazine. In 1960, Lionni returned to Italy and embarked on a new career as an author and illustrator of over 40 children’s books.
