John Newton HowittAmerican, 1885 - 1958

John Howitt had a successful career as a landscape painter and illustrator for high end magazines and advertisers until the Great Depression, when he was forced to earn a living by creating paintings for pulp magazines. When the economy recovered during the early 1940s, Howitt was able to return to landscape painting and illustrating for magazines like "Collier’s" and "Liberty." Ironically, he’s best known today for his pulp magazine work.
