Swiss-born photographer and graphic designer Herbert Matter is a key figure in the history of 20th century graphic design. Matter immigrated to the United States in 1936 and worked for "Vogue," "Harper’s Bazaar," and other magazines. During World War II he created a series of powerful posters for the Container Corporation of America. After the war, he was a long-time design consultant with Knoll Associates and worked with Charles and Ray Eames. Matter was a professor of photography and graphic design at Yale University from 1952 to 1976.
