DescriptionA buff-colored stamp cover from Czechoslovakia sent to the White House in Washington, D.C. There is no return address. Adhered in the upper right of the envelope are four stamps: one Czechoslovakian 1936 green 5k Town Square at Olomouc stamp (Scott 225), and three Czechoslovakian 1936 blue 2.50k Ruins of Castle at Strecno stamps (Scott 221). Also adhered to the envelope is a U.S. 1931 carmine 10¢ postage due stamp (Scott J84), and a red, blue, and white paper "Varnsdorf 1 / Warnsdorf 1 / 1184" registration label. In addition, there are two customs ink stamps on the envelope and several postmarks for Varnsdorf Warnsdorf [date illegible].

On the reverse is a postmark for Washington, DC, December 28, 1936. A black ink stamped message reads: FROM THE FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT COLLECTION / AUTHENTICATED BY H. R. HARMER INC., N. Y. The circled number "R177" is written in pencil in the lower right corner, and the number "DCW-1" is written in pencil near the top.
Label TextFranklin Roosevelt was an avid, lifelong stamp collector who gathered over 1.2 million stamps into his personal collection during the course of his life. He began collecting stamps at the age of eight at the suggestion of his mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, who passed on her collection to him.

After FDR's death, his personal stamp collection, including this stamp cover, was sold at public auction in 1946 in accordance with his wishes.
