DescriptionA section cut from a brown envelope adhered to which are eight cancelled Barbadian postage stamps from the personal collection of Franklin Roosevelt. The stamps attached are two 1925-1935 orange 1½d Seal of the Colony stamps (Scott 168); two 1937 carmine 1d Coronation Issue stamps (Scott 190); two 1937 brown 1½d Coronation Issue stamps (Scott 191); and two 1937 bright ultra 2½d Coronation Issue stamps (Scott 192).
Attached to the top and bottom of the envelope section are portions of a card with printed and handwritten information in black ink. The information reads: Franklin D. Roosevelt Collection / The above BARBADOS 1925/35 bearing the ½d & 1937 1d. 1½ & 2½ all pairs bearing the / auctioneer's authentication of origin is guaranteed to be / from the stamp collection of the late Franklin D. Roosevelt. / London. W.1. / David Field Ltd.
A red ink stamped message on the envelope piece, and repeated on the top card section reads: FROM THE FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT COLLECTION / AUCTIONED FEB., APRIL, 1946 BY H. R. HARMER INC., N.Y. The numbers "FRP-3" and "260" are written in pencil in the upper right corner of the top card section.
On the reverse, the number "201" written in pencil on the top card section, and an encircled "R3" on the bottom card section. The red ink H. R. Harmer auction message is stamped again on the reverse of the envelope piece.
Label TextFranklin Roosevelt was an avid, lifelong stamp collector who gathered over 1.2 million stamps into his personal collection during the course of his life. He began collecting stamps at the age of eight at the suggestion of his mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, who passed on her collection to him.Attached to the top and bottom of the envelope section are portions of a card with printed and handwritten information in black ink. After FDR's death, his personal stamp collection, including these stamps, was sold at public auction in 1946 in accordance with his wishes. This grouping of stamps includes several commemorating the May 12, 1937 coronation of the United Kingdom's King George VI and his wife, Queen Elizabeth.
