DescriptionAn original watercolor painting of a ship's carved figurehead. It shows a young woman wearing a white top with red trim, and a blue skirt and hat. She appears to be holding a pair of binoculars in her right hand. Stamped and handwritten on the reverse: INDEX OF AMERICAN / DESIGN / CONN. - Wood Carving 6.

It comes with a 3/4" whitewashed wood frame with a metal plaque at the bottom which reads: WPA FEDERAL ART PROJECT. The frame is stored separately.
Label TextThis watercolor (Conn. Ca-6) was created for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) Index of American Design by the Connecticut Art Project, Federal Art Project, Works Progress Administration. It depicts a figurehead thought to have come from the LADY BLESSINGTON, a ship built by C. P. Carter and Company in 1855 in Belfast, Maine.

The original figurehead is in the collection of the Mystic Seaport Museum, Mystic, Connecticut.
