DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the 37th cruise of the Argentine Naval Training Ship, PRESIDENTE SARMIENTO. The all-text cachet, ink stamped on the left side of the white envelope, reads: PRESIDENTE SARMIENTO / Argentine Naval Training Ship / 37th ANNUAL CRUISE / Visits Los Angeles Harbor / October 31st. 1936 / Compliments of the / CONSULATE / of Republic of Argentina, / THE OFFICERS / CADETS AND CREW. A second ink stamp below the cachet indicates the cachet is sponsored by the Hollywood Cover Club and has the original ink signature of the cachet director.
The envelope is addressed to (typed): The President / of the United States / Franklin D. Roosevelt / The White House / Washington / D. C. An "ARMADA ARGENTINA / PRESIDENTE SARMIENTO" ink stamp is to the left of the address. Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1936 violet 3¢ Arkansas postage stamp (Scott 782). The envelope is postmarked U.S.S. PENNSYLVANIA, October 31, 1936 with a "WELCOME PRE / SARMIENTO" cancellation.
On the reverse, the envelope is signed and ink stamped in black: John N. Meeks / NAVY MAIL CLERK / USS PENNSYLVANIA. Also on the reverse, a black ink stamped message reads: FROM THE FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT COLLECTION / AUCTIONED FEB., APRIL, 1946 BY H. R. HARMER INC., N. Y. The number "DRY-3" is written in pencil at the top, and the circled number "R15" is written in pencil in the lower right corner.
Label TextFranklin Roosevelt was an avid, lifelong stamp collector who gathered over 1.2 million stamps into his personal collection during the course of his life. He began collecting stamps at the age of eight at the suggestion of his mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, who passed on her collection to him.The envelope is addressed to (typed): The President / of the United States / Franklin D. After FDR's death, his personal stamp collection, including this stamp cover, was sold at public auction in 1946 in accordance with his wishes.
