DescriptionA scrimshaw powder horn. The engraved and inked design on the horn shows a coat of arms at the top, below which is an inscription that reads: NOV 22 1793 ŸŸ• • PORTO • BELLO • TEKEN • BY • ADMIRAL • VERNON • WITH • SIX • SHIPS. The lower portion of the horn has the depiction of sailing ships in a harbor with a city (Porto Bello) in the background.
Label TextPerhaps knowing of Franklin Roosevelt’s interest in naval history, John Spargo of Bennington, Vermont sent the President this powder horn in 1942. It is purported to have been used at the 1739 battle of Porto Bello (during the War of Jenkins’ Ear). During that battle, British Vice Admiral Edward Vernon captured the Spanish port of Porto Bello on the coast of Panama.

Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on February 25, 1942. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
