DescriptionA white air mail stamp cover from the Foreign Service of the United States in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The envelope is addressed to (typed): The Honorable, / Boaz Long, / American Minister, / Quito. The return address is in the upper left corner. Adhered in the upper right of the envelope is an Ecuadorian 1936 blue 3c Worker postal tax stamp (Scott RA 35) with a surcharge stamped in red: AERO SEDTA 0,65. The envelope has an illegible postmark along with a stamped consular correspondence "FRANCO DE PORTE" ink stamped message.
The reverse of the envelope is postmarked (four times) Quito, Ecuador, September 2, 1940. Also on the reverse of the envelope is a black ink stamped message that reads: FROM THE FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT COLLECTION / AUTHENTICATED BY H. R. HARMER INC., N. Y. The circled number "R178" is written in pencil in the lower right corner.
Label TextFranklin Roosevelt was an avid, lifelong stamp collector who gathered over 1.2 million stamps into his personal collection during the course of his life. He began collecting stamps at the age of eight at the suggestion of his mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, who passed on her collection to him.The reverse of the envelope is postmarked (four times) Quito, Ecuador, September 2, 1940. After FDR's death, his personal stamp collection, including this stamp cover, was sold at public auction in 1946 in accordance with his wishes.
