DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating National Air Mail Week in 1938. On the left side of the white air mail envelope is a printed cachet featuring a solid red image of the United States with the state of Nebraska highlighted in white. Blue text above and below the United States reads: NATIONAL AIR MAIL WEEK / MAY 15th TO 21st / - NEBRASKA - / "America's White Spot" / NO SALES TAX / No State Bonded Debt - No State Income Tax / FIRST AIR MAIL FLIGHT / From CARROLL, NEBR [stamped in purple ink] / to OMAHA. Along the left side of the cachet is the original ink signature of the Carroll postmaster: Nick Warth - / P.M.

At the center of the envelope, stamped sideways in purple ink, is a second cachet, this one consisting of an outline of the United States with a dot inside and the text: FROM / Carroll, Nebraska. Two air mail logos - one at the top and one at the bottom - are on the outline. The envelope is also stamped "SPECIAL DELIVERY" twice in purple ink.

The envelope is addressed to (typed): Honorable / Franklin D. Roosevelt / President / of the United States / Washington / D. C. Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1938 red and blue 16¢ Air Mail postage stamp (Scott CE1). The envelope is postmarked twice: Carroll, Nebraska, May 19, 1938 and Carroll, Nebraska, May 20, 1938.

On the reverse of the envelope are two additional postmarks: Omaha, Nebraska, May 20, 1938 and Washington, DC, May 21, 1938.
Label TextFranklin Roosevelt was an avid, lifelong stamp collector who gathered over 1.2 million stamps into his personal collection during the course of his life. He began collecting stamps at the age of eight at the suggestion of his mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, who passed on her collection to him.

After FDR's death, his personal stamp collection, including this stamp cover, was sold at public auction in 1946 in accordance with his wishes.

Custodial History NoteLent to the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Charles M. Abbott in 1949. It was donated as a bequest of Abbott to the Library in 1952.
