DescriptionA color poster featuring a war illustration of Uncle Sam astride a horse. The nighttime scene shows Uncle Sam with an anxious look on his face as he rides forward, away from a burning village with flames rising into the sky, some of which are forming a Nazi swastika. He is holding on to the horse with his left hand, while in his right hand he holds a patriotic top hat. A military aircraft squadron is seen outlined high above in the dark sky. The artist’s facsimile signature is in the lower left corner: “JAMES MONTGOMERY FLAGG.” Blue text at the top and bottom of the poster reads: “SPEED UP AMERICA / COMMITTEE TO DEFEND AMERICA BY AIDING THE ALLIES / NEW YORK CHAPTER 8 WEST 40TH ST." Along the bottom of the poster is a New York union bug, and the printer’s information, "PLAMPIN LITHO CO. INC. N. Y. C."
Label TextArtist and illustrator James Montgomery Flagg employed his familiar Uncle Sam figure in this wartime poster for the Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies.
