DescriptionA gavel sounding block and box made from wood salvaged during the London Blitz. The square sounding block, with a concave center, sits inside the square box. The box has a hinged top, brass hardware, two wooden handles on either side, and a brass handle on the cover. Mounted to the exterior of the cover is a brass plaque with an engraved inscription that reads: CONSTRUCTED OF WOOD FROM THE CENTRAL / CRIMINAL COURT . CITY OF LONDON . DAMAGED BY / ENEMY ACTION 10TH MAY 1941.
Label TextOn the night of May 10-11, 1941, a massive German bombing attack on London severely damaged a number of historic buildings including the Central Criminal Court, also known as the Old Bailey. This sounding block and box are historic relics of the London Blitz.

Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on April 8, 1943. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
