Descriptiona-b) A yatagan (or yataghan) dagger with a bone grip and an elaborately-decorated pommel and ferrule. One side of the curved silver blade has decorative engravings, along with the inscribed name: AGADIR. The other side of the blade is plain with an Arabic symbol. The dagger is encased in a decorated gold scabbard, curved at the tip. A star is engraved on one side of the sheath, and a carrying ring is attached on either side of the throat.
c-d) A wood box with a hinged lid. The box is decorated with an elaborate wood and mother-of-pearl inlay on all visible interior and exterior surfaces. The star design on the exterior and interior of the case matches that on the dagger's scabbard. The interior bottom half of the case has a green velvet insert fitted to the shape of the dagger and scabbard. The case comes with a small key for locking.
Label TextIn January 1943, President Roosevelt attended the Casablanca Conference in Morocco with Winston Churchill. During the conference, the Sultan of Morocco, Sidi Mohammed, presented the President with this dagger.c-d) A wood box with a hinged lid. Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on February 9, 1943. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
