DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the October 3, 1938 commissioning of the U.S. Navy light cruiser, USS PHOENIX (CL-46). On the left side of the envelope is a stamped red and blue ink cachet consisting of a silhouette illustration of a U.S. Navy cruiser within a red diamond. Red text above and below the ship reads: “U.S.N. / U.S.S. PHOENIX / COMMISSIONED / PHILADELPHIA / NAVY YARD / CL-46.”
The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in black ink): "President Roosevelt / The White House, / Washington / D. C." There is no return address. Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1938 violet 3¢ Iowa Territorial Centennial postage stamp (Scott 838). The envelope is postmarked U. S. S. PHOENIX, October 3, 1938 with a "COMMISSION DATE” cancellation.
