DescriptionAn oil on board painting of the Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, founded in 1798 in Oceanside, California. The painting shows the two sides of the mission's current church (built in 1815) as seen from an angle. The building is fronted by a dirt road and is surrounded by greenery and trees. Several figures are seen on the right side of the painting. The title of the painting is written along the bottom: MISSION - SAN - LUIS - REY - DE - FRANCIA - 1798. Signed by the artist in the lower left corner: CAP A AXEL. Written in the lower right corner: SPRING - MORN - 1902.

The painting is framed in a 2 3/8" black and gold painted wood frame with carved bells in each corner. Taped to the reverse is a typed note to Eleanor Roosevelt that reads: MRS. FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT / Given as a compliment for human kindness done for the unfortunate women of the masses I have seen and the great blessed kindness of your noble husband, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, for doing the noble deeds he is doing for humanity and their cause. I thank you from the depths of my soul and in all sincerity. / Los Angeles, Calif. / Nov. 14, 1933 / Capt. A. Axel / A solitary servant of the Most High. God. In the upper left corner of the note is a pencil notation: Thanked 12-27- [1933].
