DescriptionA cream-colored stamp cover from Italy addressed to (typed): All' Illmo. / Signor PRESIDENTE UNIONE STATI UNITI / DI AMERICA / WAXINTON. There is no return address. Adhered in the upper right of the envelope are two Italian 1929-1942 red-orange 1.75 lira Augustus Caeser postage stamps (Scott 224). The envelope is postmarked (twice) Mirabello, Italy, September 4, 1937 and also has a black and white paper Mirabello registration label.
On the reverse of the envelope are two Italian postmarks, September 4 and 5, 1937, and two postmarks for Washington, DC, September 14, 1937. Also on the reverse, a black ink stamped message reads: FROM THE FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT COLLECTION / AUTHENTICATED BY H. R. HARMER INC., N. Y. The circled number "R113" is written in pencil in the lower right corner.
Label TextFranklin Roosevelt was an avid, lifelong stamp collector who gathered over 1.2 million stamps into his personal collection during the course of his life. He began collecting stamps at the age of eight at the suggestion of his mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, who passed on her collection to him.On the reverse of the envelope are two Italian postmarks, September 4 and 5, 1937, and two postmarks for Washington, DC, September 14, 1937. After FDR's death, his personal stamp collection, including this stamp cover, was sold at public auction in 1946 in accordance with his wishes.
