DescriptionA red, white, and blue March of Dimes rhombus-shaped (diamond-shaped) cardboard donation card. At the center is a large “60” with ten slots in which to insert dimes. Text printed above and below reads: Fill / this 60 with / Dimes / Join the / March of / Dimes.
On the reverse side of the card are mailing instructions and lines to fill in the donor information. Printed in red at the center are the words: FIGHT / INFANTILE / PARALYSIS. The card was issued by The Committee for the Celebration of the President’s Birthday for The National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, Inc. A New York union bug is printed at the bottom.
Label TextFDR created the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (which became known as the March of Dimes) to support the polio rehabilitation center he had established in Warm Springs, Georgia in 1927 and aid polio victims around the nation. The Foundation urged Americans to send their loose change to the President in a “march of dimes.” The March of Dimes supported the research and development of a polio vaccine by Jonas Salk in 1955 that eradicated the disease throughout most of the world.On the reverse side of the card are mailing instructions and lines to fill in the donor information. This donation card was issued by the Foundation in 1942 to coincide with the President’s Diamond Jubilee (60th) birthday.
