DescriptionA watercolor painting of a ship's carved figurehead of Liberty. It shows a seated female American Indian figure with a feather headdress. A patriotic American shield is on one side of her and an eagle figure is on the other. The painting is matted within a paper folder. On the page opposite the painting is information text regarding the figurehead.

The piece is housed in a series portfolio (see MO 1944.105.1.1b).
Label TextThis watercolor was created for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) Index of American Design. It depicts a figurehead that is likely from the packet ship, CONGRESS. The original figurehead carving was once in the collection of investment banker Loyall Sewall of Bath, Maine.
