DescriptionA gold-colored metal badge for the 1940 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois. The piece consists of, at the top, an elaborate pin back nameplate with symbolic Chicago imagery and a framed opening inside of which is a plastic-covered paper insert on which is typed “ASSISTANT SERGEANT-AT-ARMS.” Connected to the nameplate by a set of short chains is a badge that has an image of the U.S. Capitol dome backed by a star and the scales of justice and flanked by American flags. Text on the badge reads: “1940 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION.” The manufacturer’s information is stamped on the reverse of the both the nameplate and the badge: “BASTIAN BROS. CO. / ROCHESTER N.Y.”

Backing the nameplate and badge is a double layer of red, white, and blue vertically striped ribbon suspended from the reverse side of the nameplate. The ribbon manufacturer’s name is stamped on the back: “MFD. BY / LAUTERER / CHICAGO.”
