DescriptionA crystal goblet, number 1 out of 500, commemorating Dutch support of the independence of the American colonies. In the style of a Jacobean rummer, one side of the stemmed glass has an engraved 18th century design of the Dutch royal standard crossed with an American flag with 13 stars, and the words, "DE VRYIE STAATEN" [THE FREE STATES], within a banner above the flags. Engraved on the other side of the glass is the inscription: DEN 19 APRIL / 1782 [THE 19TH OF APRIL / 1782].
Label TextThe date engraved on this glass – April 19, 1782 – represents the day on which the Netherlands recognized the United States as an independent nation. The goblet itself was made in England, sometime around the middle to later 18th century, and then imported to the Netherlands where it was decorated by a Dutch engraver.

The goblet, which relates to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Dutch heritage and his interest in American history, was given to the President in 1934 by Henry R. Sedgwick, a former classmate.
