DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the 1936 commissioning of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter, USCGC SAMUEL D. INGHAM (WPG-35). On the left side of the envelope is a black stamped cachet consisting of an illustration of a rope-encircled life preserver ring inside which is a drawing of a submarine and ship on open sea, and an airplane up in the sky. Text above and on the illustration reads: “Commissioning / U.S. NAVY / Samuel D. Ingham / COAST GUARD CUTTER.” The cachet designer’s name is within the drawing: “DR. HUTNICK.”

The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in red and blue ink): Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt / Washington / D. C. in the upper right corner of the envelope is a preprinted U.S. brown 1½¢ George Washington stamp (Scott U481). The envelope is postmarked U. S. S. PORTER, September 10, 1936 with a "NAVY YARD / PHILA, PA" cancellation.

The return address is ink stamped in blue on the reverse of the envelope: S. E. HUTNICK, M. D. / 5933 LANSDOWNE AVENUE / WEST PHILA., PA.
