DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the 1935 commissioning of the U.S. Navy destroyer, USS MACDONOUGH (DD-351). On the left side of the envelope is a blue stamped cachet consisting of an illustration of a ship’s anchor inside of which is a drawing of a Navy ship on open water, and an airplane and blimp in the sky. Red and blue text on the cachet reads: “U.S.S. MACDONOUGH / U.S. NAVY. / THE NATION’S DEFENSE.” The cachet designer’s name is within the anchor: “HUTNICK - 1934.”
The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in red and blue ink): "The President of the United States / Mr. Franklin D. Roosevelt / Washington / D.C." Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1923 carmine 2¢ George Washington postage stamp (Scott 554). The envelope is postmarked U.S.S. MACDONOUGH, March 15, 1935 with a "FIRST DAY IN COMMISSION" cancellation.
The return address is printed on the reverse of the envelope: “S. E. HUTNICK, M. D. / 5933 LANSDOWNE AVENUE / WEST PHILADELPHIA, PA.”
