DescriptionA model made of palm wood (or balsam wood) with a natural finish depicting a typical Arabian dhow. The lateen rigging, long overhang forward, high poop, and open waist are chief characteristics of the dhow. The rigging is made of string and the large fabric sail is furled. The model sits on a cradle attached to a wooden base.
Label TextThe Dhow is a traditional sailing vessel used for centuries in the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. This model was made in Tanganyika Territory (part of modern-day Tanzania). It was presented to President Roosevelt by Raymond J. Lepow of New York in November 1940.
