DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the April 3, 1939 commissioning of the U.S. Navy submarine, USS SAURY (SS-189). On the left side of the envelope is a blue and red stamped cachet consisting of a small profile illustration of a submarine on open water with text above and below that reads: “US NAVY / USS-SAURY / SS-189 / COMMISSIONED NEW LONDON, CONN. / KEEL LAID JUNE 28, 1937 / LAUNCHED AUG. 20, 1938 / GROTON, CONN / ---- R. C. D. - 70 ----.”

The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in red and blue ink): "The President of the United States / Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt / Washington / D.C." Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1938 bister brown 1½¢ Martha Washington Presidential Issue stamp (Scott 805). The envelope is postmarked U. S. S. SAURY, April 3, 1939 with a "FIRST DAY IN COMMISSION" cancellation.

The return address is ink stamped in blue on the reverse of the envelope: "S. E. HUTNICK, M. D. / 5933 LANSDOWNE AVENUE / WEST PHILA., PA."
