DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the 1937 decommissioning of the U.S. Navy destroyer, USS BAINBRIDGE (DD-246). On the left side of the envelope is a thermographic gold-colored cachet. The upper half of the cachet features the circular seal of the United States Department of the Navy with text above that reads: DECOMMISSIONED AT SAN DIEGO, CALIF. In the lower half of the cachet is a small rope-bordered box within which has been adhered a small black and white photograph of the USS BAINBRIDGE. The box is flanked by illustrations of a ship’s wheel and an anchor, and below is text that identifies the photo: U. S. S. BAINBRIDGE (246) / Destroyer U. S. Fleet.
The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in ink): The Honorable / Franklin Delano Roosevelt / Washington, D.C. Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1936 purple 3¢ Rhode Island Tercentenary Issue stamp (Scott 777). The envelope is postmarked U.S.S. BAINBRIDGE, November 20, 1937 with a "SANDEIGO / CALIF" cancellation.
The return address is written on the reverse of the envelope: A. M. Salem Rm 2/c / USS Bainbridge / San Diego, Calif. Also on the reverse is another postmark for the U.S.S. BAINBRIDGE, November 20, 1937 with a “LAST DAY IN / COMMISSION" cancellation.
