DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the 1935 commissioning of the U.S. Navy destroyer, USS MACDONOUGH (DD-351). On the left side of the envelope is a green cachet with a line drawing illustration of the USS MACDONOUGH atop of which is perched an American eagle with outstretched wings clutching a patriotic shield and surrounded by a laurel wreath. Above the illustration is a banner that reads “U. S. S. MACDONOUGH.” Text below the illustration reads: “COMMISSIONED / NAVY YARD – BOSTON, MASS. / COMMANDER C.S. ALDEN – COMMANDING OFFIDER / LIEUTENANT W.W. JUVENAL – EXECUTIVE OFFICER / NAMED IN HONOR OF COMMODORE THOMAS MACDONOUGH, U.S.N. / 1783 – ‘THE HERO OF LAKE CHAMPLAIN’ – 1825 / ‘OLD IRONSIDES’ CHAPTER NO. 1, U.S.C.S BOSTON, MASS.” The cachet designer’s name is below the illustration: “J. E. GILL.”
The envelope is addressed to (typed): “President Franklin D. Roosevelt / The White House / Washington, D. C." Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1932 deep violet 3¢ George Washington stamp (Scott 720). The envelope is postmarked U.S.S. MACDONOUGH, March 15, 1935 with a "FIRST DAY IN COMMISSION" cancellation.
