DescriptionA George Washington commemorative jug. On one side of the colorful jug is a depiction of George Washington and the signing of the Declaration of Independence with the words “FIRST IN PEACE / FIRST IN WAR” below. On the other side is a scene with the wording "First in the hearts of his countrymen," showing George Washington and several of his generals standing behind a group of people looking away from them and towards the U.S. Capitol building in the background. Between the two scenes is a “document” with the reproduction signatures of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, starting with John Hancock. Wording wrapped around the bottom of the jug’s base reads “DECLARATION of INDEPENDENCE.” George Washington’s face forms part of the jug’s spout, and the top of the jug and the handle are wrapped in a red, white, and blue stars and stripes design. On the jug are the signatures of the designers: “H. FENTON” and “NOKE.”

On the underside of the jug are drawn illustrations of an eagle and the profile of George Washington, along with text that reads: “The / GEORGE WASHINGTON / 1732 – Jug – 1799 / A - Great - American / The Father of his Country / First President of the United States / The edition of the Jug is 1000 only / This is No. [no number] / ROYAL-DOULTON ENGLAND [maker’s mark].”

Adhered to the interior of the jug is a small sticker with a handwritten ink number: “D-3-2.”
Label TextDesigned by Charles Noke and Harry Fenton, and manufactured by Royal Doulton, this unique artist's proof jug commemorates the bicentenary of George Washington's 1732 birth. The jug was sent to Franklin D. Roosevelt in September 1936 by R. S. Marks, Director of A. Marks & Sons Ltd., Manchester, England.
