DescriptionA three-masted, square-rigged wooden model of the screw sloop-of-war, USS HARTFORD. The ship has a black and natural wood hull, white trim, no sails, a single smokestack, and white life boats. An American flag flies at the stern, and a nautical flag flies from the top of the center mast. The model is fixed to a stained wooden stand with a green felt-lined bottom. A paper label with typed text is adhered to the underside of the stand: BUILT FOR THE PRESIDENT / BY VINCENT MILTO / 30 NANSEN ST. / PO7 PITTSBURGH PA.
Label TextThis model was sent to President Roosevelt by the maker, Vincent Milto of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on November 30, 1939.This is one of several models of the HARTFORD in Roosevelt’s ship model collection. The HARTFORD held a special interest for the President because a Delano ancestor was involved in its construction. The ship served as the flagship of Admiral David Farragut at the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864.
